Greetings from Las Vegas. My name is Matt, my gf and I just inherited a project truck that has been a lot of fun and pain in the past month. It's a 1982 High Sierra that has a modified 454 dropped in it probably 20 years ago. It has been used for years at a competition waterski lake as a tow truck. I have recently started to recondition the truck to use on trips to Dumont, CA. I am looking forward to utilizing this forum to get advise on things i have done wrong in reconditioning this truck and getting info on what its going to cost me to get this truck restored. Glad to see so many people who love these trucks, its a hell of a lot of fun to drive.

Matt

Welcome to the forum,

I regret to inform you that the truck is absolutely worthless, you might as well just sell it to me for scrap prices. Any half ton short bed truck with a big block is just not worth your time, You should sell it too me.

What exactly are you meaning by restore it? That paint looks perfect, I cant spot any flaws in the pictures. how are all the rubber parts? door seals and all that crap make a huge difference in your driving experience.

the paint is in fair condition, there are a few scratches and a lot of oxidized paint. the body is straight, the interior is not torn apart but everything is pretty brittle from being parked in the Mojave desert for 30 years. I got it for free and am trying to set a budget to fix it up. so far ive spent about $1k on a new edelbrock carb (600cfm, wishing I had gone bigger) replacement rims and tires since some riffraff stole the old ones, drive shaft balance and new ujoints, lights and put a 454 fuel pump on (had a 305 fuel pump, vapor locked easily).

I think my priorities are the suspension, re-route the exhaust, replace interior.

just looking at some suspension upgrades and my front leaf springs are curved downward... is that right? shouldn't they be curving up? I get the feeling the big block in there may be too much weight for the stock springs.

Nice truck, the stock front springs usually curve the oposite as the rear springs. I imagine the big block makes them curve more though lol. I bet that thing will pass anything but a gas station lol
