308,000mi and the original serp belt tensioner assembly broke in half, just above the pulley. WTH?

Fortunately it didn't happen during the 1,320mi round trip to the Grand Canyon 2 weekends ago. And... it didn't happen on the return trip to the Grand Canyon this past weekend, where I was towing my VW Rabbit Pickup on a tow dolly, so that I could leave one vehicle at the South Rim, drive the other to the North Rim, and then run across the canyon back to the South Rim. Literally, I was all loaded to leave, pulled away from the curb, heard a loud bang, and lost power steering and alternator. 5:30pm, but the local autozone had an AC/Delco tensioner assembly for $54, and a Continental belt for $36. It took longer to drive the 1 mile to the store, than to do the repair.
