Hey guys,

I’m putting together a 77 c10. It’s got a 400 (406 with a roller cam) and no plans for a/c.
I’m thinking about putting in a serpentine belt kit.
I don’t think I’m going electric water pump. I will probably go with a 3 row aluminum radiator. The original was rotted.
One thing I don’t understand is, what is a high, mid, or low mount water pump?

Any other insight to offer?

Thanks

the water pump i imagine if it were electric would have different mounts

Oh I see, I googled. If you have a special application, you may need to raise or lower the water pump to put the fan in the right spot and also put the bosses for the alt and ps up or down with that.

So if I’m running a standard setup I use a mid mount? Top left setup in the pic attached for reference.

I don’t think the aftermarket 3row alum radiator would change anything.

if you have no plans to ever change your amount of accessories, i personally would put the pump and alternator higher (leave water pump of course)
You must be registered for see images attach
most of these trucks had a high mount alt on passenger side, and a mid mount ps pump on the driver. the reason ps is mid is because the AC pump would be above it usually.
If you are doing QOL changes and improvements, I would mount a PS pump high as well simply for the dipstick being easier to reach and also the higher up the less grime it will collect from enngine leaks.however, midmount for both would give you the best belt lengths
you dont plan to change to hydroboost or have a second alt right

Nope, no plans for hydroboost or a 2nd alt.

then yes it should work fine. If you want to do it cheaper, you can get the brackets and pulleys from junkyard 88+ tbi which uses a serpentine belt which is tensioned. the system you are looking at is technically still a old tensioned belt, but with more wrap(multi-v, poly rib, etc belt) serpentine belts have just one for a situation like yours and have a tensioner and use a reversed water pump direction and fan to drive the wp with a smooth side of the belt

If I had to choose one or the other, tho, and price wasnt so high, I would personally choose the option you found because I wouldnt mind periodic retension of belts as well as having 2 dedicated wide belts instead of a single belt that has the mercy of tensioner(but Im under hood enough, i shouldnt get surprised by those when going bad like some people) Its personally preference at that point. it will also "dress up" much nicer this way too. However, I would have goals of more accessories so I may be the one to choose the high mount simply to have access to the lower mounting areas later
