I did my monte carlo trunk that way, stripped it sanded it then hit it with self etch primer, then painted it. It lasted for a few years for sure. Might try some other method though, rust converter or something then self etch later?

Yeah, I'd try some CLR or some Evapo-Rust first to chemically remove as much rust as possible.

evaporust sucks, aint worth using. you have to submerge the part and keep it that way to work, kinda hard to do a door that way.

Now that purple power stuff c4 uses to convert rust may work.

I don't think I would trust that door enough to put nice paint on it. Those doors can be made out of some real low-grade metal and the damage may be too bad to permanently repair.

Soda blast may brighten it up. That Purple Power Rust Reformer is good for frames or other undercarriage but I'm not sure how rough it would make a body panel. Maybe after it dried it could be lightly sanded smooth and ready for primer, but if you did go that route I would prime it and keep it stored in a garage for a month or so and see if any rust creeps through. So far it has worked great for me but my truck's a rough ole cob.

hit it with self etch and see how long it lasts or epoxy primer.

Newbie here.My name is John, and I've always used muriatic acid for cleaning rust from panels.Wear rubber gloves,as it's pretty strong. just paint it on with one of those sponge-type paint brushes, wait for 2-3 minutes, and flush it with water. It will even take the rust out of pitted steel. CAUTION!: It smells like rotten eggs,so use it in a ventilated area, and DON'T get it on skin!
You can get it at any hardware,i.e.,Lowes,in the plumbing area.

Try jhngardner367's suggestion above, sounds like he's done it before.

save it. try the naval jelly, or acid stuff, rust reformer or whatever or just self etch it or epoxy and be done.

Just run with it and see what happens. I just wouldn't trust it if a show quality paint job is in your plans. What's your plans anyway? Spray paint, roller paint, cheap paint, nice paint?

I was thinking of the "shower method" where you set it in a big plastic tote and fill the bottom then use a sump pump and hose to continutally clean it. I've never done it before though, so I couldn't swear by it. Maybe you have?
