Is it possible to install a 700r4 from a newer model truck (such as the 88-98 models) in my '87 SWB Chevy?

It has no overdrive.

Welcome to the forum Mike. Yes, they will all fit. I think starting in 93 and up they starting using the electronic versions and you would need a controller to use these. 92 and down uses the tv cable that hooks to your throttle and are cheaper to use.

How will this affect my factory shifter inside?

You may not be able to manually shift it in low(1st) or if you can the indicator may not read right. Not 100% sure.

I'm just about certain the shifter will work just fine, but the indicator will be off if you have a D 2 1 indicator. However, it's real easy to swap to the OD D 2 1 indicator that is common on the 83 up half ton instrument clusters. You don't have to change the whole cluster either. The indicator is a separate peice that screws to the cluster housing.

The lockup circuit is differant also, I did the swap in my truck. The later transmissions need an imput from the computer to lockup. I bought a kit off eBay that replaces the wiring in the pan, along with the pressure switch for fourth gear. That way it only locks up in fourth.

Actually, the trans doesn't really care where it gets the lock up signal from. It can get it from the ECM if you are running a TBI computer truck, or it can get it from a Vac Switch if you running a carb and no ECM. You just might have to swap a pin in the harness depending on the wiring sequence. You can also bypass or add the 3rd gear pressure switch if you do or do not want 3rd gear lock up.
