The difference is daylight and dark. If you're willing to spend the funds to build the 400 and transmission to go with it, then sure it's worth building. You might look up the engine kit prices vs Chevy prices though. If you have Chevy cores to build, it'll be cheaper to build the Chevy for sure. Depending on the year model and what head cast #'s, might be able to sell the Pontiac cores to one of the Pontiac guys for a restoration project and use those funds toward the cheaper to build Chevy cores. Just a thought, but I wouldn't throw it away. Either use it or sell it. They're harder to find these days for those who want them which there may not be many that do want them but price it right then there will be someone that has to have it.

Don't we have somebody here that has a Trash-Can with an Oldsmobile engine in it? I don't remember how many cubes though. He may not want to trade down.

I have an Olds 403 which in 79 wasnt as good as a Poncho 400. You could only get a 400 with a manual trans and the 403 with an auto. Dunno why it was that way but it was.

At the end of the day the 400 can be made into a sweet engine with some cash flow. If I were you I would sell it and use the money for a Chevy engine that would drop in easily. Pontiac engines are generally more expensive than a chevy, stock for stock. Does that 400 run?

If I didnt wanna keep my "Trash Can" original and numbers matching I would go with a 400.

Pontiac actually quit making the 400 in 78.

They stock piled like 9000 to use in 79, but they sold more than planned and I think there were 7900 put in Formulas and T/As in 79, and all were 4 speeds with no cruise.

403 has potential, but in stock form is just another smog motor.

400s are strong motors, or can be, but I prefer to see them in a Pontiac car.

My .02.
