I have a 1984 K20 and the top of the cable where the round head is broke off where it goes into the assembly. I see how to fish it out and back through the floorboard. There is a connector piece that I am assuming that I remove it from and purchase and new correct cable? Is this how it is done? Can I purchase the cable locally at a parts store or do I need to order one from LMC or etc?

You can fix it but it would only be a band-aid.
Safest bet is to replace the whole cable.
Try RockAuto or one of GMSB's other site sponsors.
