Have my Dad's last new truck . . . 87 GMC R1500 with 4.3L . . . only 86k miles. Managed to chase down all the hoses, gaskets, etc suffering from old age and the engine is now 'oil tight' no drips on driveway. Part of the refurbishment included replacing cover gaskets . . . while covers were off we discovered oil pooling under the covers . . . drains down through the heads/block were restricted. Got all the 'guck' cleaned out . . . pulled pan and washed that out too. Replaced valve stem seals.

Truck runs good. Mileage ~17 on highway . . . I think about average for that powerplant.

Unfortunately, the engine 'consumes' about 1 quart of oil per 250 miles. Tailpipe is sooty. I'm an electronics engineer with just enough engine-smarts to keep my fingers out of the fan blades. Looking for advice on potential pathways for oil to be getting into places it doesn't belong.

Before we start engraving the headstone, I’d make sure you have a working PCV valve if you haven’t replaced it. I’d say vacuum lines, but it sounds like you already got that taken care of.
