Well, maybe you *Shouldn't* tow in 5th on the NV4500, but you *Can't* cruise in 5th in the SM465. And the gear ratio splits are closer on the NV than the SM, but of course there are better options if you have the cash to make it happen. I don't.

I can’t emphasize strongly enough what an absolute disaster the NV4500 actually is…
1. Weak (fragile) synchros
2. Very expensive proprietery gear oil
3. Can’t tow in 5th
4. 2-3 and 3-2 shifts have a HUGE rpm drop
5. 1st is absolutely useless in the internal slave cylinder version, unless way over its duty rating, in the mud
6. No real drain plug, take out a pto cover bolt, when it quits dripping, pull pto cover and mop out another 1.5 cups of goop
7. Damned near impossible to refill in a 4wd or if you have passenger side exhaust.
8. The BW t-case that goes behind it is 1000x worse

My 99 K3500 c&c is getting an SM465, Ford NP205, and a carburetor swap. To correct its built in flaws. Already disabled the ABS…
Agreed on the fluid and synchros. I wished I'd of put an 80e in instead.

But the SM465 has an even worse drop 3.58 to 1.70
VS
3.04 to 1.67 or the 3.44 to 1.71 depending on which NV4500

32 spline NP241 fit

Pull one side up on a bank or ramps gets the fluid out. I've refilled mine through the shifter hole.
