Hey guys, newbie from Southaven, MS and new to square body trucks.
Just got a 1987 1 ton LWB 4x4 with 454 CI FI and 4 speed, 205 transfer and 410 gears.

Been reading a bunch of info on swapping to a NV4500 and am now more confused than when I started and was hoping to get some help.

Thanks,
Marks

Welcome to GMSB!

That's a swap I've considered many times. I don't have much info on the swap though.

I used a nv4500 from a 94 chevy and a 208 from a 87 chevy 32 spline input gear into my 85. I have a round pattern 205 I will eventually adapt to it

I used the 94 bell housing, slave and master cylinder. the master takes a little work to fit the 87 body. I had to slot the mounting holes on the master cylinder mount to fit the firewall studs and make the rod from the pedal to the master

it depends on what t case you have I think you should have a round pattern 205

I am not completely sure but I think you can adapt the round pattern 205 by swapping in a older short 32 spline input. and it should bolt right on the only thing I am not sure on is the input gear. but I think it will work

and you will need to build a shifter mount for the t case

or another option is the 208 from a 85 and later turbo 400 or long output 4 speed round pattern it will bolt right on but the shifter for the t case will need to be relocated

Thanks for the replies, I have a 2002 K3500 NV4500 that came with the truck when I got it. The guy I got it from said it would fit into the 87 with an adaptor, trans is a brand new rebuild and was really wondering if it will make that much difference on the mileage with a 5 speed. Also what kind of money will the adaptor cost? Should I sell the 5 speed and not tear up a running and driving truck???
