Facing a dilemma with the wheels/tires on my '87 R1500. It currently has the stock 15x6 (?) steelies with stock size tires. As much as I'd love some cool aftermarket wheels, or some widened steel for a bit more attitude, the budget for now says sandblast the stockers, give them some fresh paint, and add new tires. The question is, I want to go with a subtle big/little combination. Keep in mind, the truck has the stock ride height for the time being, but I eventually want to lower (not slam, but maybe 3/5) it, so I don't want anything too tall. Suggestions?

Also, thus far I've been unable to find out what size tires came on it stock. I've read anything between 195/75-15 and 225/75-15s. Thank you! -Marc.

Your factory tire size should be listed on your SPID. And I agree, 15X8 steelies or Rallys with a minimum of 235/75r15. I’m running 255/70r15 on a C1500 and it has a tough stance.

Well Marc, I've got a C20 and recently had to make a decision. Like you I really like the subtle big little look. I almost went with 265/75-16 rear and 245/75-16 front, but in the end decided to do the 265's all the way around. Mainly for added maneuvering traction at the farm.

What do you currently have on it?

If you currently have the 225/75-15 you could easily keep that size on the front and go to 235/75-15 on the back or 245-75-16 if you want more. Remember that the middle number (75) is height to width ratio so as the foot print gets bigger so does the side wall. Also the larger tires will have a higher weight rating even if it's in the same class. On the farm there is a Dodge Dakota that is now pretty much dedicated to being the water hauling truck. It has 195/75-15's on the front and 225/75-15 on the back. The reason we did that was being able to get the 225's in an D rating. On that truck there is not enough room in the front for that big of a tire so we kept the 195s on the front.

Hopefully this helps.
