Whats your experience with the EDP / e-coat on new panels? Like with bondo on bare metal or primer, seems to be 50-50 as to what guys do. I saw a short AMD video saying to keep it out of the sun, scuff it and paint it. I've seen several big time builders say the same thing. Most of Eastwood's project cars are 75% new EDP panels they paint over. Then I hear some think its the kiss of death and it needs to be stripped off. If I had to strip it bare, think I'd use aircraft stripper as I'd be afraid of the heat from a DA or flap disc.

I have the same question as about to paint new panels. Everything I've seen says to scuff with RED Scot Brite pads, clean with paint prep degreaser, then primer. Curious to hear what overs have done!

The front fenders on my truck were GM replacements from the late 90’s that came black e-coated, just scuffed and painted them. That paint job was 25 years old when I started my restoration and there were no signs of the paint or e-coat failing.

The e-coat just needs scuffed with a red pad and it can be painted. After cleaning, of course. There is absolutely no reason to strip it off.

I had a small area of top coat which lifted on the tailgate when I pulled tape. I scuffed it then epoxy primer before top coat. I’m not a good example since I have been working in mostly outside uncontrolled conditions. I scuffed the floor panels and brushed enamel which didn’t lift when I had to reposition sound deadening material which surprised me. Enamel was brushed on months ago and I basically poured it and spread with brush. I didn’t use any other primer on the floor panels.

Yep, as stated above, we (AMD) just recommend a good scuffing/cleaning/degreasing, then primer and build up from there.

Just what you said, "scuff with RED Scot Brite pads, clean with paint prep degreaser, then primer." No issues.

But always clean with degreaser before the scuffing as well.

You don't even need to use primer. Paint will adhere nicely. Primer is only needed for a show quality job that is straighter than factory.

And do you normally paint the backside first and then flip and paint top side? Repeatedly for base and clear? I won't be able to hang all the parts so trying to determine the best was to paint both sides for all the panels and have it look decent?
