Greetings

I am the proud owner of a 1989 GMC Suburban. It is the 2500 Trailer model with the 454, factory towing option, 8 lug wheels, and 3.73 rear end. A beast. The SO and I decided to look into getting an RV. After a lot of looking around I decided on a travel trailer. All I had was a Ford Taurus and an Explorer (5 speed) so I needed a towing rig. 5 minutes on CL and I found this baby. Owned by an older guy who had stopped RVing and just had this lying around. He was anal about the maintenance of it, and had spent about $10,000 on it since he bought it second hand (with 88K for $14K) back in 1995. The body has some rust, but not too bad. In fact, I'm in the process of patching it up. Runs great, everything works. Also came with a set of studded snows with rims. Paid $1,300 for the package.

I give you, "The Massive"

The paint on the hood was toast. Sanded it all off and primed it. Monday I'll pick up a quart of Olympic White. I just couldn't stop at the hood. The grill, bezzels, and trim over the bumper needed a touch up too.

I'm working my way around the rig. Heavy rust under the stick-on trim on the drivers side door. Gonna need a little fiberglass to patch that one. Also the barn doors need a lot of work. If anyone could give me a link to a place I can buy replacement weatherstripping, I would be grateful.

More later...

Looks to Me like, you hit the bargain bin, on that rig.
Looks real nice.
There are sponsers listed, You might could give them a try, "Rock Auto" has a lot of nice stuff, good prices too.
Long Motor company is quite often mentioned in here too.
Welcome to the forum, a lot of real nice folks in here and, not a lot of drama either.
89`ll like this thread.

Welcome aboard. How do your rear in wheel wells look? Are they split open from the rust yet?

Didn't think to look. I went outside and checked it out and they look good. We don't use much salt out here in Seattle.

Now, the barn doors, that's a whole different matter.

It looks like this will need a little more than bondo. I'm thinking about using Miracle Paint with fiberglass to patch it up. Now you see why I was needing info on the gaskets.

And a little dent repair.

Don't forget to check out the Rock Auto Vendor section here on GMSB for the "How did you hear about us" code. That will get you a 5% discount. It also let's Rock Auto know they're getting business from the forum.

I did the weatherstripping on my 89 burb bout a year ago. I bought the strippng from LMC truck,,,didn't know bout rock auto. Ur gonna need three pieces,,,one for each door and theres a smaller strip that runs across the top of the door jamb. Hardest part of the job was getting the old stuff off cuz its glued on. I don't have the rust you do though. Prob I don't like is the new stripping is thicker than the old rotted stuff,,,so I have to slam the doors to shut em,,,,and to open you have to push in on the rt door then push the button to unlach,,,then it will open. The latches on the bottom are bolted on and I think I could adjust it by moving the latches out but I don't want the seal to b e too loose cuz I don't want leaks. As it is now it a little water still gets on to the carpet when it rains or I wash the truck,,,,
