Hey folks! First post here. I figured I'd start it off right. I'm in the process of putting my sound system together And building a custom console. Progress is gonna be slow so hang in there. Plus I change my mind a lot.

Equipment is:
JBL GTO 6.5 components
Blaupunkt GTW Mystic 10"
Phoenix Gold Ryval V754
Sony XAV-64BT headunit
Sound Quest wires

Here's some of the kickpanel build.

Sprayed my box with Rustoleum Bed Liner but it doesn't cover worth a sh** but it is pretty tuff. Soooo I went and bought a quart of Duplicolor Bed Armor. Gonna roll it on here in a little bit in class.

Hey man looks really good! I have never fiberglassed before but I am thinking about fiberglassing my dash pad. Got any tips/advice or maybe how I should go about doing it...

Preciate it guitarfreak!

@gunman9 prep work! Have all your material and tools you need! Fiberglass cloth is easier to work with than mat is. I found that out real quick! Make sure your frame/base is solid... Fiberglass gets pretty heavy after a few layers. And most of all take your time!!!

The cloth can be bought at any fabric store right? Will any resin work and what is the exact process to get a nice outcome like yours. This is gonna be a shot in the dark and probably a one time deal if it comes out bad lol

Here's the duplicolor finish. I wish I would have rolled it on instead of brush it on but oh we'll. I'm Building a different box later anyways.

Yes the cloth can be bought at most stores. I got mine at wal-fart. Since your doing a dash your gonna need a thick heavy coat. So get a thick fleece fabric. I use 3M's wax resin. If you don't get all the layers you want before the resin dries you have to sand it before applying another coat. Your gonna need a LOT of body filler (bondo) too.

For a dash (or any fiberglass fabrication):

1.) you need to build your frame
2.) stretch fabric tight and glue to back side of frame (make sure you get all the wrinkles out and be sure it's TIGHT!!!)
3.) apply a heavy coat of resin to cloth.
(Here's the fun stuff)
4.) you have to sand the resin down to get thru the wax (don't sand too much)
5.) spread your bondo over the fiberglass
6.) sand bondo to get a good shape
7.) primer and paint

That's a very short rundown of it. Its hard to explain. There's a guy on YouTube that has a good video of how to do fiberglass kickpanels. It's basically the same process just smaller. Do some searching and lots of reading and I'm sure you can do it. Just take your time and be educated on what your working with.

@gunman I just realized you said dash pad! For the dash pad you won't need a frame. Mask off the entire dash pad with tape the lay aluminum foil over the tape. Then lay your mat or cloth over that and apply the resin and keep adding layers of cloth/mat.

Do you have to use mat? Or can you just use cloth and resin for the whole project

Yes you can use cloth. It's easier to work with than mat. But you'll need more layers of cloth.
