The retard box has me curious. How is the timing retard activated and does it require an MSD ignition box or can it be used with stock HEI?

You need a ignition box. The retard box basically delays the ignition pulses based on what chips are installed. There are 3 trigger wires that retard timing by removing a ground. There is also a trigger wire for the start circuit. Connect that to the starter feed, whenever the engine is cranking it pulls 20 degrees of timing out. It’s great for engines that have locked ignition timing.
