Just picked up this '86 k1500. it needs some TLC, probably won't ever restore it, but have plans to fix it up to a dependable driver that I can use for years.
this truck had been sitting in the weeds for probably 6-7 years before my cousin bought it last year, and I just bought it from him.

more than 100K, could be 173k, 273k, 373k??? no idea, but i found a reciept in the glovebox from 20 years ago with 84,000 miles on it, so it has to be over 100k.

needs:
-windshield
-drivers side vent window glass frame (bent not sure how to rebend if at all possible, glass is good)
-window seals, passenger side is pretty much missing
-dash lights don't work, no power at fuse (original fuse was blown, replaced but no power, hmmm)
-possible rear main seal leak, maybe oil sending unit, not sure. already fixed -leaky valve cover.
-seems like lots of blowby since now there is oil being pushed passed grommets for oil fill tube and breather tube
-rear differential whine, at least from my understanding of it.
-some body work and interior work, but overall pretty clean, not much rust, rare since it is a ND/MN truck. frame looks great

i was surprised to find out it had 3.42 gearing, no idea if OD is working, most of the vacuum lines and electrical connections on the carb have been disconnected.

going to test engine compression tomorrow, maybe do drivers side valve cover if the compression is ok.

here are the pics.

rpo code x6z, it says hubs, locking automatic. does that mean I don't need to get out and manually lock them? i tested the 4wd and it works, but I manually locked and unlocked them.

Howdy! Auto hubs are problematic and yours have been replaced with manual hubs. Whenever driving in conditions that you may need 4 wheel drive, you can just leave the hubs locked and shift to 4hi when you need it. You can leave the hubs locked all winter if you want to.

how about OD, if i shift from OD to D while driving i can feel the shift back and forth, but I have no idea if the torque converter is locking up. guessing not since it seems like most computer stuff has been removed?

wanted one of these trucks forever, but don't really know much about them.

I was told by my old auto shop teacher to see if a torque converter is working tap the brake while driving 30+ mph while still on the gas and if it revs up it is working if it doesn't then its not. Don't know if that's true but I tried it in my truck and it worked.

When I did mine I was doing 45 and steady holding the gas and just barely tapped the breaks. And you can hear it rev up a bit

Any 700r4 equipped truck should get a trans temp gauge installed, because it's usually heat that kills them. If the gauge reads hot then you know to back off the throttle and save the trans' life.

Welcome to GMSB.

As bucket said, you CAN leave your hubs locked in all winter long if you want, since that Transfer case will Divorce the front driveshaft from the powertrain. But, it does actually hurt the mpg a bit and also your throttle response on take offs. This is because with the hubs locked in the front wheels are going to drag the front axles along for the ride which is going to turn the front carrier and then spin the front driveshaft, so in short you're dragging along components you don't need. But, you do have the option. I normally just get out and unlock mine unless I'm just a few miles away from where I'm going and then I'll unlock them when I get to where I'm going. I actually usually forget so the next time out and I realize I feel the extra drag, I end up pulling over and doing it, so I generally just try to lock in when needed, unlock when I don't need'em. You'll like the Manual hubs better. As bucket also said, Automatic in this case, means Problematic. Some will say they've never had a problem with Auto hubs. Could be, but they probably drive it like a girl too.

Yup that works, but I'm about 95% certain it isn't locking when it should be. Not sure which system I have either. I'm thinking with all the sensors disconnected whatever is supposed to signal to lock it isn't working

That's about as much as I know about automatic transmissions. Your gonna want to talk to hotrod or bucket they have helped me and a lot of others on this site. There are more that have helped but I don't remember the names of them
