Jeep steering shaft

I found a couple of the 87-95 Cherokee steering shafts at a local yard. I brought them home and dropped them in my solvent tank to soak. After a few days I pulled them and scrubbed them clean. But the rubber around the one joint was soft and spongy. Since then it has dried out some and seems more solid. Are they still usable? Or did I trash them?

I don’t know about the rubber but I would think soaking them like that would probably let the solvent penetrate the ujoint cups and thin or dissolve the grease.

Just buy a new shaft,use the search engine,there is a GM shaft I think it's out of a 3500 series that is supposed to be a drop in deal.

Can you post a picture of the shafts and the rubber you are talking about?

I think Cunningham is supposed to make a decent one. I haven't tried it, but I've been considering trying that out.
