working on my 305 sbc heads my old valves were pretty beat im going to the stainless steel route but having trouble how do i find out the size of my old valves?would the numbers on the head give me that answer or how do i measure them?thanks

You just measure them. There's only a few sizes used in SBC heads. Probably 1.84/1.50 valves.

You can get the casting number off a head and look it up online. It's probably a 601 head.

I'm not sure if this applies to a 305 head, but a 350 head casting number could be fitted by the factory with as many as 3 valves sizes. For example, the 624 head came with one of these valve sets: 1.72/1.5, 1.94/1.5 or 2.02/1.6. (Not one you'd want to use by the way.)

The way I understood it was the 305 truck heads were casting no. 601, and they have the 1.84/1.5 valves. The same casting shows 1.72/1.5, but they also came in the 267 SBC. I've only heard of the aforementioned valve size in the pickup truck 305.
