I didn't read everything so this may be covered but here's the acronym BOB big on back. The rear shoe is the long shoe
That actually helps a lot! Thanks! I use mnemonics like that all the time (over a decade wrenching and I still tell myself "righty-tighty").

These drums are a bigger PITA than I remember and than I have ever done. how do you stretch a spring you can't even flex?! You need to be an octopus to do the job, as everything keeps trying to fall off while I'm trying to install springs.
I am so putting a disc brake conversion on the future to-do list. I should be able to scrape together enough by the time these brakes need replaced...

Btw, y’all, I have looked. My Big10 does NOT have adjuster holes in either the backing plates or the drums, nor does it have un-punched holes. Solid plate, solid drum.

Earlier models don't have the adjuster hole, my 79k5 no hole, a friends 77c10 no hole, his 86 c10 has the hole.
I drilled holes in my backing plates, tapped them and put short bolts in to keep the dirt out.

Aftermarket drums dont seem to come with the knock out plugs, so it could be that is the reason for your above examples.

The drilled hole and bolts strikes me as a stroke of genius - well played!

Believe me. It happened. There’s no pics because I was QUITE done with these drums.

Disc conversion kit on the list of future things to do…

It took long enough that my brand new wheel cylinders are rusty. Lol

Don't do it, it's a trap! LOL. I was eager to swap to rear disc also, but having seen enough negative threads here on the topic, I am pulling an about face.

Thanks for the great pics! I was trying to put the adjuster bolt mech in the wrong spot and of course I was having issues! Instead of putting it on the vertical piece I was trying to put it on the horizontal piece. I have great pictures of the top of the system from before I disassembled it but did not get a picture of the bottom. I actually woke up wondering "How the hell does that adjuster stay on?" Now I know!
