All:

I've got a flatbed that will dump, on my 89 one ton. I'm finally getting around to getting the rams mounted, as originally I had to cut the old lower mounting points off in order to install the bed. So, I'm now looking at hydraulic pump units. My intention is to just get one that's designed for dump trailers, I've got single acting rams. Any of you have strong opinions on good pumps for this application? I don't need a very big one. By my math (which I need to re-check) I think I can get away with a three or four quart fluid reservoir. While I'm at it, I've got a second factory battery tray under my hood. See any advantage to installing a second battery for this application? I can't really think of one, but I thought I'd ask.

Probably need to consult with pump manufacturers. There are high volume and or high pressure pumps and you may need a flow restrictor in the system somewhere. Make sure the return line/hose is larger than pressure side. There's lots to consider such as RPM.

Why would I need to consider engine rpm for an electric hydraulic pump? Or am I misunderstanding?

I've seen kits for sale that turn a regular pickup bed into a dumper. Pretty sure they use a 12 volt hydraulic unit. Look into those and see if you can get just the pump.
