hello. I’m currently figuring out proper routing for my hydroboost setup. Truck was originally hydroboost, but the new ps pump is just different enough to necessitate some reworking the lines.

This is the original return from steering box to ps pump. It didn’t have an o-ring. Notice the flare. It bells out, not back in. Just open raw edge.

The hydro lines I’m cutting up to adapt are slightly different at the flare.

The top is the newer one, the bottom is the original.

Is one right? Does it matter? I’m using an o-ring when reinstalling unless someone has a reason not to.

That flare that didn't have an o-ring... it's supposed to have an o-ring.

The flares are different from what I can tell. Here's a couple of articles and info on adapters. The Hot rod article about midway talks about a change GM made around 1980. It been too long since I did mine to recall what flare type I have. The picture is just one I pull from the internet.

Mine don’t have the conical face inside the box. I’ll have to read that article when I go inside.

Is that a recessed O-ring?

I don't seem to have any PS hoses handy here in the garage, but I do have some oil cooler hoses that are the same o-ring type flare. The proportions are just a little larger.

It’s odd. I placed the factory fitting into the steering box with and without the oring and both ways it seated metal to metal. I put the factory fitting back in with an oring for now. I was trying to avoid this shwoopy nonsense with the 3/8” hydraulic line...

I wanted to use a 90 like this, but the nut is too short to seat and the 90 is too short of radius to swap nuts.

The metal to metal keeps it from wiggling around and loosening up, but "bump O-ring" fittings rely on the O-ring to seal.
