How many yolk teeth can you loose and still drive?

Seems the answer is at least three in my case!!!

I've started my rear end rebuild project only to discover that I've been cruising around with an explosion waiting to happen!

I knew as soon as I cracked the cover open and saw the matalic sheen pouring into my drain pan that there was a problem....

But then I found the first chunk and was like, what in the world is going on! By the time I got the yolk out I had found another two teeth!

Have you guys seen or experianced anything like this before?!

I wrote a post on my square body blog if you want to see more of the gory pics!

The good news is, I had already planned an purchased a Truetrac limited slip carier and a new set of gears. The only thing that left me a bit concerned was a bit of missing metal from where the carier shim sits against the housing:

But honestly, I think that's going to be ok...

Any thoughts or recommendations?

I've done it before. Had 2 missing on a Pinion and 3 on the ring. Was like well son of a gun. Put the cover back on pull the big pieces out of the oil put it back in the diff and drove like that for quite some time till I could afford new gears.

Use one of the factory thick cast shims up against the housing and then adjust with the thin shims to set the lash and preload. You should be fine.
