Hey Everyone I’m new to the Chevy world and I recently bought a 78 C15 and I’m trying to identify the engine in the truck and where it came from as it is not the engine the truck was built with. The Casting code is right by the timing belt cover and it looks like 106061SC. I also include the picture for those of you with better eyesight than me. Any help you fine people can give me would be appreciated.

Thanks

The last two letters "SC" in the engine suffix comes back to a 1962 327. Check the oil filter and see if it's been changed to a spin on filter. Also look on the back of the block and get that casting number.

Subscribed to see what the other casting numbers are. Block may be worth something to a '62 Vette owner trying to do a restore.

Hmmm....that’s funny it’s a 454 engine but I can’t see the block casting number because of the firewall.

It is T 0606 TSC.. the first letter "T" is for the manufacturing plant, which is Tonowanda where almost all 454's were assembled. The next 4 numbers are the date code, which says it was manufactured on June 6th, The last three are the engine suffix code. Which is either 1SC or TSC.. I can't find a 1SC suffix code, but TSC comes back as either a 1975 or 1977 Truck 454. 1975 engine would be 215hp LS-4, 1977 would be a 250hp LF-8.

Also, are you sure it isn't the original engine? A 1978 2wd 1/2 ton could have come with a 454 from the factory and the engine stamping could be a 06/06/1977 build date, which would be possible for a 1978 model year truck. Does your truck still have the SPID sticker in the glove box? You can also send off $50 to the GM Heritage center and they will give you the original build sheet and delivery sheet for your truck if you don't have the SPID tag in the glove box. The build sheet wont tell you everything, but will list all options other than factory that were paid for.
