I had a Y-pipe and single muffler on my '79 C10 with no tailpipe. Exhaust ended about a foot passed the cab. Sounded great. I used to get a lot of compliments on the sound.
And what was the muffler? That seems to be my trouble of choice

If you want deeper sound but not really louder, I really like any kind of "Turbo muffler". To me, it gives a good tone that would likely stand out over there in Germany, but would not attract much attention from police etc. Kind of a "glug glug glug" sound to it. At highway speeds, you probably won't hear it, at full throttle you will.
If you want loud and best performance, a "Glasspack" style has more pop sound, maybe? But will probably attract attention the wrong way, especially from neighbors on quiet mornings. And you will always hear it.
Welded or chambered mufflers are deeper but still have a sharp, raspy tone when you hit it, and often have drone that makes them unpleasant.

My vote is a turbo muffler if you don't care about performance and want deep sound without getting obnoxious, but obviously it is your call what you want.

I can't quite remember what brand. It was one of the more popular turbo-flow mufflers. I just bought it at Autozone and clamped it on.
AutoZone seems to sell a lot of Thrush and Dynomax mufflers one of those in the turbo version maybe.

Thanks für that summary. I came zo the conclusion that turbos might be my best choice. I watched too many vids and footage showing these and thise, my short list is:
-Thrush turbo (did not yet understand whether there are different loudness types in that turbo expression)
- flowmaster 50 delta flow (a chamberef i know, but kind of the tone I'd fancy with mild drone and loudness.)

I believe to start with thrush, the smaller invest and if not good enough i can try to improve onwards

This is my 1995 Suburban.
It has the stock exhaust configuration on it, stock exhaust manifolds, Y-pipe, single pipe out the back.
In this video, my son is learning to drive in the snow and has no issue pushing the pedal down.

The muffler that has been under the Sub for the last 20 years has been a Flowmaster original 40 series.
After 20 years we replaced it for a fresh new one of the same make.
This has lasted for all that time and over 100,000 miles, pretty good for my money.

You can see the new muffler attached to the fresh pipe going in.

I do have a catalytic converter and that kills some of the obnoxious high pitched noises.
We had to replace the cat and in went a fresh Flowmaster piece in place of the well used factory part.
It turns out, we blew the insides out of the convertor and that was a good reason why we could not pass the emissions test....

The pipe under the Sub is a stock 2.75 inch pipe from the Ypipe to the end of the tailpipe.
We replaced it with a fresh from the junkyard piece off another Sub.

We do not have any drone inside the vehicle.
Conversations easily happen.
And it has a great sound just toolin around town or when you jump on the gas pedal.

It does not sound as loud as other original 40 videos i saw. Yours actually sounds what look for.
Man it is hard to get a clear picture from indirect sources i.e. not seeing myselve in person and live.

Driving in the snow on a sunday on the local home depot parking lot ... Yeah i remember that fun, too.

If you watch the video posted from Enginemasters, a straight through, large case muffler (like a Magnzflow) had the best performance. I have dual 2 1/4”, H pipe and Magnaflow mufflers. It is a very moderate sound at low RPM, with some growl and rap as you run up the RPM. Never wakes up the neighbors when I start up, but sounds like a strong 350 on the highway.

Dynomax makes a straight thru oval (Ultra flow) bult like a glass pack, perforated tube wrapped in packing. Supposedly a deeper tone than their race bullets. I'm running a set of the 3" versions off a set of fender well headers. Just finished getting them mounted not sure what they sound like yet as I dropped the saddle tanks to make room for the exhaust and put a fuel cell in the bed and haven't gotten fuel in it yet. I'll post a video of it running tomorrow after work.

John, man that thing looks serious. I actually though magnaflows would be more dark toned and covered. A lot bass, not that many highs. But that video makes me think again.

xm20k, thanks for the impression, too.

I watched a bazillion videos comparing all the different equipment one can buy. In the end, it is impossible based on a video guesstimate how loud it really will is and feels like. I think 40 and 44 will be too much. I like the raw tone, the flowmasters have a metallic, hollow resonance with bright, high-pitched overtones. It produces a tinny, almost echoing sound with sharp, ringing peaks that give it a raw, aggressive edge. but, too many db.
maybe 50 delta flow...At least as per flowmaster info pages, that is way milder than 40 and similar ones.

and will look into thrush turbo. I want to have that roadrunner (is that what it is?) as a badge on the car :) :)
That might be the most accurate colorful well put description of a muffler I’ve ever heard!!
I just say they sound like an empty coffee can. But nothing sounds better than a lumpy big block exhaling thru 2 empty coffee cans!!
For a more qualitative review of Flowmater 40s….dual 3” 40s with h pipe, behind a stock 454 emit exactly ZERO noise with a 600 watt stereo on volume level 18 of 35!! lol!

A. It has a cat
B. There’s snow
C. Most of the time the noise was pointed the opposite direction.
D. I didn’t hear or see anything over 2k rpms, tops, come out of the pipe.

But good sample of a single exhaust with a loud turbo muffler.
I can tell you dual 3” 40s even with full length exhaust behind a mild big block is a fair bit louder. And from your description, you don’t want a 40.
Slap a Flowmaster 60 or equivalent turbo type chambered muffler on it and enjoy some noise when you cob on it and mellow when your right foot isn’t as happy.

On my 86 Dodge d100 with a 360 I had full length headers into a Flowmaster Y pipe to a 3" single exhaust. The summit stainless muffler was straight through (like magnaflow) and was quite loud. A late model f150 donated it's 3" tailpipe and I installed a 3" dynomax Super Turbo in the tailpipes to quite it down.

If I had it to do over I would likely run the longest case muffler I could get 18-24" long go with a magnaflow type muffler.

I know you aren't after performance but at least a 2.5 mandrel bent exhaust with a long muffler of your choice will sound good without being obnoxious IMO.

Just say no to Flowmaster :Moon:
