My Saturday was a bit different than normal. Earlier in the week I received a call notifying me that I’d won the sealed bid on this GORGEOUS ‘85 CUCV. I am extremely pleased and surprised by both the condition of the truck and by the”winning” the bid. Anyway, will all the equipment loaded so that I could retrieve the non-runner; I was bright enough to grab a CUCV key and carry with me. The station is about an hour away and when I got there the Asst. Chief advised me that there was no key for the truck. I’m sure glad that I had one left from previous CUCV trucks I’ve owned. I have regretted selling my last M1008 and I don’t anticipate getting rid of this one as it has become quite difficult to find them in a decent condition or at an affordable price. Now comes the time to see if we can get the Detroit making some noise!

Beautiful CUCV! My ill advised way of getting old diesels started is taking a cloth rag and putting some gas on it and holding it over the intake with the air cleaner off. Much more efficient then ether bunny

These CUCV have different wiring than the regular C/K trucks. The starter relay along with glow plug card and many other electronic goodies are dangling beneath the dash.
I've found the starter (purple) wire cut underhood & have tied it together temporarily. I've bootlegged the starter relay only to get horriffic grinding from the starter.
Seems the next step is to drop the starter & investigate the drive & flexplate. Then I'll toss 2 hot batteries in & let the music begin!
I usually soak the throat of the intake with WD40 or PB Blaster and give the runners a snort of carb cleaner just before spinning the engine. Sometimes while the glow plugs are cycling there will be a "pop" thru the intake where the WD & carb cleaner are in the pre-combustion chamber. This will give the engine a slight nudge too.
I'm not there yet unfortunately...
