I got this gm goodwrench motor and looks like I need to check the timing chain, but I noticed it doesn't have a timing tab. I friend told me these motors have the mark made into the timing cover. I took a picture, is this raised area on the cover suppose to be used to set timing? If not, can I just buy a stock tab and bolt it on? thanks,

Verify TDC on #1 to find out what balancer you have, as there are a couple variations of timing pointer locations, then go from there.

When I bought a new Goodwrench motor it came with two bolt-on timing tabs (for large and small diameter balancer) and they attach at about the 2 o’clock position using two of the timing cover bolts. I assume the OEM tab may have been tack welded to the cover.

Summit racing sells bolt-on tabs that look like they should work.
