General 4wd FAQ Thread?

Just looking into the 4wd world and there is too much I don't know about these beasts. It's like your posts are in greek.

Is there anywhere on this site that explains the differences in the various front/rear differentials, transmissions, locking vs. auto locking hubs etc. ?
What about info on what was offered on the different models and years?

I'd love to have a quick and dirty lesson that would help me to better understand what's going on here. Maybe I'll just have to keep doing what I'm doing and take it in one confusing post at a time. But if there is a better way to get my feet wet, please point me in the right direction.

I don't know of any threads that have all the information condensed into one location, it's spread out all over the forum. Put your questions here and if the thread gets enough traction (swidt) it could become a sticky.
