Ill have to ask it in the right thread but how much hassle is it to replace the th350 with the 700R? Sucks because i have a good 700R but its attached to a Tcase.
I'm assuming your truck is 2wd. You would have to remove the transfer case adapter and replace it with the proper tail housing. You will need a transmission valve cable bracket to make the 700R4 work. Jegs, or Summit have them.

Didn’t They make 700s that had no computers or cables for the 6.2 diesel trucks starting in 82?

The 700R4 is a mechanical transmission. Electronic 700 R4s are 4L60Es.

They had a lot of problems with them up to about '88ish when they added clutches and made other upgrades. However they're still kind of limited. I had one in my ''urb that held up fine behind a turbodiesel, but it appears to be the exception, and it was built by a performance shop for heavy duty service.

Oh, and it still had a TV cable.

I too would keep 4.56's and overdrive it.

The only thing controlled electrically on the R4 is the converter lockup. No such thing as an R4 without a trans valve throttle cable. It controls the shift points via the throttle linkage be it a gas or diesel.
