Fuel tank sending unit leak

I am trying to source a fuel leak. I can smell the fumes whenever I'm around the back of the burb. No puddles or wet stuff anywhere so I popped the hatch that the PO cut in the floorboard to check out the sending unit. One of the four tubes coming out of the thing has dark cruddy dirt on it at the base, kind of varnishy not sopping wet or anything. That tube wiggles slightly. The rest of the tubes are dry and don't wiggle. Are all the tubes supposed to be solid or do they "float" so to say on an o-ring or something?

I ordered a new sending unit and realized there should be no play in the steel tubes that connect to the sending unit. Seems like a no-brainer after the fact. Just adding this in case someone else has the same question.

It's the one in the middle that is closest to the plug. I received a new sending unit and pump from Rock Auto, but haven't had a chance to install it yet.

Here a two pictures of the cutout. It was kind of tough to get a good shot because the under carpet material is all over the place and it's dark. There are basically two support pieces of steel that are bolted to the floorboard and the cutout then bolts to those pieces. I'm going to silicone around it when I get it back together because I don't want any fumes coming in the truck.

Today I replaced the sending unit and fuel pump. I couldn't find fuel hose for the filler neck and breather so when I find those I'll be able to finish this part up and cross it off the list.

That's an interesting idea on the hatch. I've usually just added some flanges to what I cut out, then screwed it down. One time I used some hinges too, lol. I like the idea of some angle iron in there too.
