I've been wanting a truck for years and finally found an old one that suited me. I picked up a 1974 Chevy Cheyenne Super 20 with 80K original miles on it. It belonged to an old man who just drove it around a small town. The hood needs to be repainted ASAP and there are some other minor cosmetic things, but it is all original and seems to run well. This is my first project vehicle and I've never done anything more serious than a brake job, so I'll be on here looking for advice. In fact, I already am since the AC/heater temperature control lever is stuck on hot.

I'm looking forward to learning about this truck.

Welcome nice truck. Get some lube on them hood hinges before it bows any further. They also make stiffeners to help with that.

You mean just spray some WD-40 or something on the hood hinges?

Some thing they stiffen up and start bending the hood in half. In the pics you can see the gap halfway back the hood to the windshield and it's tight up front.

Hmm... I'd say the easiest thing to do with your heater problem is to remove the dash bezel and pull the HVAC controller. It's pretty easy; there's just a lot of little tubes that clip on so be careful not to loose the clips. Once you get it off, I'd work the selector to see if that's what's stuck, or see if it's the cable going to the flapper that switches between the evaporator core, the heater core, or blends them. You can work the cable to see if it pushes in and out of its sleeve right by the controller. If you don't find an issue there, I would suggest checking out the lever that moves the flapper, which is under the dash on the passenger side. I'd look at the controller first since that's easiest.

I noticed that you mentioned about the clear coat peeling on the hood. Several vehicles that I've seen do that are missing the hood insulation. Sometimes that stuff looks ratty, but if it does one thing, it protects your paint job.

Welcome!
