Distributor Wiring

Originally had ESC but dad had abandoned in 90s

I am swapping engines. New engine has HEI also.

The distributor had a combo connector into the ignition slot. Black connector runs to passenger side. White connector runs to drivers side.

My guess was that black went to esc and white is ignition.

What are these for? Do I need both? Can I leave off black if not using esc?

IIRC, the terminals on many distributor caps are marked/ embossed with something like BAT and TACH. All you need is 12 volts ignition-switched to the BAT terminal.

Thank you. Do you know why the truck originally had what seems to be 2 wires connected to BAT on distributor?

The standard HEI power connector (many aftermarket places sell replacements) has only one wire. However, if you had ESC maybe it had another powered device.

As far as I know all you need is 12v switched with at least a 12 g wire and the other lead is for a tach.

Agree that’s all I should need. But this truck has a second wire tied into BAT and goes into factory harness. So I’m trying to figure out what the 2nd wire goes to and if I need it.
