Make sure your voltage coming from the dimmer in the headlight switch is good. The potentiometer windings tend to get cruddy or they just fail. Low voltage will cause dim instrument lighting.

My before and after pics, used some blue LED’s a friend gave me.
He bought them online and had leftovers.

Where are you guys that are using dimmable bulbs getting them? Do you have a link by chance?

I am an old fart. I rode in these trucks when they were new. I can promise you that an as-designed gauge package is readable day or night -- when new. Forty years is a long time for UV, dirt, and corrosion to work evil magic.

If you cannot see your gauges odds are good that the only thing needed is to renew the lens and bulbs. Make sure you have battery voltage to the dimmer, make sure the dimmer is fully functional, and the circuit has a good solid ground. You might need to clean the contacts on the bulb holders and PCB. Change the color if you want to. Just recognize that white lighting will effect your night vision.
