Hey guys. I was curious about something. I currenty have 3.73 gears and those are to high for the size of wheels and tires I have. But due to cost I was wondering if I could do just the rear end until have enough money to do the front. Since the front is a taller gear and I would be going to 4:11 in the rear i'm thinking id be ok. I know if i had the 4:11 in front and the 3:73 in rear that would cause issues cause the fronts would be fighting the rears. I am right in thinking this. Do I need to remove the front drive shaft while waiting for the fronts to get done? Any input would be much appreciated. I'm looking at about 600 a differential. I would be up to doing myself but done have equip to press the seals in. Thx and hope everyone had a merry christmas.

You can run two different ratios to get by, just don't lock in the front axle at all.

4:11 in rear and 3:73s in front, if locked in, will bind within ten feet.
Bind bad enough that it will bust something of moved in that same direction any further.
I know a feller that tried this. He did`nt break anything, only because I happened to be there and told Him to move forwards again, unlock hubs and transfer then He could go.

So let me get this straight. As long as I don't lock the hubs I should be ok. There is no need for 4we where I live so it will always be in 2h. Do I need to remove the front shaft t be safe?

If you have no plans to re-gear the front anytime soon, it would be a good idea to remove the shaft. It could prevent accidental damage in the future.

My second girlfriend bought a brand new Wrangler 4x4 in 1994. We took it to my moms and went to put it in 4Hi, it wouldn't go anywhere. Came with two different gear sets from the factory. She was pissed.

Funny thing a new GMC 1500 parked beside a new Dodge 2500. Hail storm goes over. The dodge has dents 3 times the size of the ones on the GMC!. True story.

Dodge/Ford = ****
