Components Speakers (Tweeters in the dash?)

I am upgrading my stereo because I want to move the soundstage up in the truck. I have 3.5 in infinity reference in the dash powered by the HU and 6x9 behind the seat powered by an amp (100w each). All the music is coming from the back because the 3.5 can't keep up. I have a set of kick pods to fit 6.5 inch speakers that I will power with an amp.
Has anyone run components and put the tweeter in the dash? I know its not ideal (pointed to my ears) but I'm hoping it will be enough of an improvement that I won't hate myself.

Can't be any worse than the tweeters I mounted just below my dash. Which I personally think sound just fine.

You need a way to balance the front and rear speakers. Does your stereo have 4 speaker outputs and a balance control? Or can you do it with the extra amp?

I have 3.5” infinity speakers (bought from Crutchfield) in the dash being powered by a retro radio HU (20rms I think). They can’t take much more power.
The 6x9 in the rear are being powered by an amp (100w rms).
I’ll play with the balance but I don’t think the dash speakers will be able to do much to keep up unless I totally drop the gain on the 6x9….to the point that the amp is pointless.

I’d put some power to the 3.5s. They don’t have **** for bass, but tune out the low frequency and use them as a high range tweet/mid. Better than just a tweeter, you need some range from the front.

When talking 3.5” dash speakers, “fit” is a liberal description. Most/all 3.5s fit the hole. Most/all are taller than OE as well and won’t fit without mounting them under the dash frame and even then it’s close. I found what I thought was on the shorter end of projection ht above the mounting flange, under mounted them and they still push the dash pad up just a smidge. It appears to just hit the frame around the speaker cone but I think it affects the midrange cone performance a bit. (Not taking them out. That would be more work than it’s worth)

Get a two way crossover, use the woofer side for the dash 3.5s and use the tweeter side for your add on tweets. Mount tweets on A pillars or on back of rear view mirror where the sound will ‘bounce’ of the windshield giving you a little more ambiance. I’ve done this and worked out well giving the front stage more ‘pep’, or a location of your choosing.

David, you asked about dash speakers. You and Todd are both right. I went a different direction. No kick panel speaker pods were available when I put my system together. I cut holes and mounted speakers low in the doors of my brand new 1982. All high end matched Sony equipment, best I could buy 40+ years ago. Stereo head, just two channel amp. Pre-amp DIN cord to the rear amp. Custom mounts for the back speakers.

I already own speaker kick pods for 6.5” speaker. I’m wondering if I go components with tweeters where the 3.5” are at.
Or I could go full range 6.5” that will be amplified. No tweeter.

I don't seem to have my pictures anymore, other than buried in my Suburban thread somewhere. I put 6.5" components in my '78 that already had speaker holes cut in the door. Being that my '78 only has the center dash speaker location, I mounted the tweeters to the lower corners of the dash where they aren't super obvious. They point upward a bit.

It was just a basic Pioneer component set that I got on clearance somewhere, but IMHO, the sound quality is much improved over a basic 2 or 3 way speaker setup down low.
