Cargo Lamp / Third Brake Light

Been looking - maybe in the wrong forum - could swear someone did this or was going to do this....to install a later cargo lamp / third brake lamp in a square.

Just wondered if they ever did and what was involved? Mine doesn't have a cargo light at all, so wouldn't mind making this work (IIRC its for a 99-06 Chevy), but would like to know before the cutting commences. Wiring is easy - worried about how it looks, seals, etc. Never thought the original cargo lamps did much anyways.

I'm concerned with cutting a hole that isn't there....and how well it would seal with the new lamp. If there is a contour difference, I would just forego the idea altogether.

I remember an 86 Silverado I had - had a cargo lamp and it was about worthless.

Yes, it’s an upgrade/project that may not be worth the effort.
Newer cargo lights are much brighter and more purposeful than the ones in ‘86.
A new bulb and lens in the cargo light on my ‘84 made a big improvement !

I dont even know where or what shape to make an original hole for an original lamp. lol

I know everyone has different purposes for these things, but I'd much rather put LED strips under the bed rails to light up the bed than cutting holes in my cab for a light of questionable effectiveness.

I spoke to United Pacific at Dino's Git Down last year and they stated that they are supposed to be coming out with a combo led brake and cargo bulb/ lens that goes into the factory housing. They had a display at the show with the 67-72 and it was very nice and bright.

LMC offers the factory housing, bolts, gasket for around $30-40 bucks and they also now sell the cargo light switch as well. You'd just need to run some wires and done and looks factory.

Is there a slim flush mount light available that could easily be mounted with only a few drilled holes and silicone sealant to keep the water out?
