No you typically dont but here is a way to find out if you need one. You will need 5.25in from the top of your leaf spring to the bottom of your frame (not the bottom of the bumpstop bracket) at ride height. To break that down you need 2in minimum suspension travel, 3in for the axle tube, and 1/4in for the flip bracket for a total of 5.25in. Anything less I would recommend a c-notch.

Probably a better idea to install a c notch than not to. Nothing worse than slamming the axle tube on the frame unexpectedly. If you install a notch...be sure to also include a pair of urethane bumpstops in the notch just in case.

I always go with the c-notch when doing a flip kit, its worth the time for the extra axle clearance and to reduce bottoming out on the frame during heavy loads. Not a hard job to do, took us a few hours. Maybe longer than most as we had to take extra time to protect the finished body and frame.
