Fwiw there was a guy posted here a while ago who made a die to press in the 70s style recess in the bed side for fuel filler.
Aside from it being a great write up, it did not seem prohibitively difficult with basic tools although a lathes would make the die pretty quick. (Out of wood. Maybe hardwood?)

I could swear that LMC once offered a weld in panel to install a filler door. Came with the door too. Went back later to buy one and couldn't find it.
It seems that you are talking about the round hole for gas cap.
Somebody should start offering these up for sale.
