Hello,

I am upgrading my 87 to the 96 fuel pump. Purchased the Delphi HP10256 sending unit along with the Delphi FE0114 fuel pump.

However, the strainer will not snap on the bottom of the fuel pump. This is a very common upgrade, so I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

Idk about your question specifically, but a96 fuel pump is running 58 psi, and your 87 is only like 12.

So it's only an upgrade if you're doing an LS swap, or other MPFI.

The TBI regulator brings it back down. It's a common upgrade.

I have a 383 TBI and the truck is not running right at all. Likes to stumble and it feels like it’s starved for fuel.

The motor only has 3000 miles on it and I’ve had a few different mechanics go through it really well and they all say that it’s not getting enough fuel

Did you have a chip burned since you are running a 383 and I have no idea what cam. TBI is manifold pressure controlled it's very sensitive to camshaft profile. I'd also try bumping the fuel pressure if it's not getting enough fuel. That will increase the amount of fuel delivered with the same injectors duty cycle.

I have not had a chip burned. Stock cam. Did not realize you could adjust the fuel pressure on this one. I found one company that burns chips and they said they did not have much success with the stalling issues that the 383 causes. So they would not do it for me.

Need to reach out to TBI chips and check. Do you think that’s a requirement? I still need to increase the fuel pressure if I’m not mistaken.

So you are running a stock cam in a 383? Are you sure?that would be very unusual. Reach out to Harris Tbi tuning. As for bumping fuel pressure it's not adjustable, you will need to modify it to be adjustable,or change the spring in your stock regulator. Harris sells springs and maybe and adjustable regulator kit. Rereading your original post it probably is starved for fuel, not because your pump is bad or insufficient. Because you are drawing an extra 33 CID of air but have done nothing to provide more fuel from the injectors, either by increasing PWM(injector on time) or by bumping pressure to force more fuel through the injector using the same amount of on time. Does the check engine light work? And is it lit.

According to S&J engines it is a stock cam. I appreciate all of the info by the way!!!

I’ll reach out to Brian and see what he can do. The check engine light does work, had various sensors go bad recently like the map sensor and the IACV.

It will crank right up on a cold start, but then shake and struggle until until I give it gas for a few seconds.

It drives “ok” but will have a hard time starting once it’s warm.

TBI unit itself is new, most everything aside from the engine has less than 200 miles on it.

According to TBI Chips the number 1 thing you should do is upgrade the fuel pump. Which is what I’m trying to do

Back to the fuel pump strainer. Is the one for the 96 different from the 87 to 95? As far as the cap goes. I’m thinking about grabbing one to see if it snaps on to the fuel pump.

I couldn’t find anything online where people are having to do that though

Post up some photos of the offending fuel pump and strainer so that so we can see what you're seeing

Here's a little tid bit for you. A 305 and a 350 there are 45 CID difference. They run the same TBI,the same ECM I believe the same PROM,they run the same fuel pump. The only thing I know they change for sure is larger injectors. I honestly believe that is the only change.
Now you have added 38 CID and done nothing to increase fuel flow from the injectors. Changing fuel pumps does not increase fuel delivery from the injectors. I think you probably do have a fuel problem, but I don't think you are addressing the true problem.
