Verify it is the rear main I've seen people replace them only to find out it was the rear of the valve covers or the China wall on the back of the intake that was leaking.

Oil pressure switch,is the one I've seen most.

i ordered some UV oil dye and a black light for further investigation. I will have to be careful to keep the blacklight out of the cab.. prefer not to know what has gone on in there

Sometimes they will stick a little. I use a seal pick, pull on one side and push with an extension or screwdriver on other side. Have always been able to get upper 1/2 out that way. Just be careful and not nick the crank. In frame like this get a 1-piece pan gasket.
This is the pan gasket kit you want. The corner pegs for alignment are money!! No sealant needed any you can reuse them

Just realized; I hope I am helping the guy out who did this job in 2023!!

You are everywhere on this forum! haha

Might ask for your guidance on a similar fix on my truck. Ordered some oil dye to pinpoint a leak but after the start up today, there new oil leaks on the ground and starter so it leads me to believe my rear main seal is a likely culprit.
Just reread this, " there new oil leaks on the ground" as in these leaks were not present before you changed your valve covers?

There were leaks but this one occurred after startup and only during running of the vehicle (as of right now). I will recheck the size of the spot when i get home to see if it had grown. This spot was not there before i did the test startup yesterday. The new Valve covers and gaskets look clean

Hi all,

I apologize if this has been covered but I wanted advise on my specific year just to be sure.

I have a 76 K10 Scottsdale and the PO of my truck told me the rear main seal was leaking and based on what I've read I believe that's correct. My question is, how big of a job is it to replace the rear main seal?
My understanding is that I have to remove the oil pan to replace it but all my mechanical experience has been working on this truck with the advice I get on this forum so I want to make sure I'm not biting off more than I can chew. Id rather pay to have someone do it right than risk ruining something if it's a big job. I appreciate any and all advice!

If you feel that the rear main seal is too much for your ability I would recommend you take it to a local shop and let them make the repair, sometimes I have replaced rear main seals and had them leak, and that's in a shop environment using a lift ,steam cleaner, and had everything that I needed
And if a shop makes the repair they should guarantee the repair.
Sometimes the crankshaft is worn either on the thrust or where the seal rides .the pcv system is often overlooked
I think you would be better off using a shop's service
This is just my opinion from 50 years experience.
A repair job is only as good as the person that's doing it.

Just did another check and it looks like it may be the valve cover. This wasnt here yesterday so must have dripped over night. Thanks for the idea to double check. It was a long night under the truck in the rain yesterday so my mind went to the worst possible culprit first. Ill recheck valve cover bolts and reinvestigate
