Regarding 4H shifts, I go in and out of 4H at highway speeds all the time, and have done this forever. 208, 205...

Winter driving in BC on mountain highways as well as logging roads.

Getting into 4L with an automatic I need a full stop and then into neutral before I look for Low.

208 and 241 can be shifted from 2hi to 4hi any speed and back.
Make sure hubs are locked first. Not pretty if shifting at speed with unlocked hubs.
Idk about auto hubs, speaking for manual hub

^this^

If you have manual hubs, you can have them locked in ahead of time if 4x4 conditions may be needed. When you need 4x4, just shift into 4hi at any speed.

Auto hubs, you can shift at basically any speed, from 2hi to 4hi. However, going from 4hi back to 2hi, the hubs will stay locked until you reverse for a foot or two. The owners manual will say to back up further, but I've never found that to be needed at all. The hubs will unlock nearly right away.

And I'll be honest, if someone is having to ask the proper procedure for shifting a t-case, chances are good that they will never ever need to shift to 4low. The average person will never have a use for it.

I hardly ever use 4lo, but when I do, I just put the transmission in neutral, complete stop, and shift. I’ve never had a grinding sound. I do occasionally need to put it back in gear and pull forward a foot or so, just to help the gears line up a bit easier. I certainly don’t jam it in, I’ve heard of guys snapping off their t case levers. I’d like to avoid that.
