Hi all,

have a bit of an immediate problem. My son has a 1993 OBS 4x4 truck, and the 4l60e transmission has left the building. He uses it for work, so we need a fix.
As we don't have a local yard full of old trucks to go to, question is are there any alternatives that we could fit up?
Apparently this box is a one piece ( not a seperate bell housing ), and 2 year only specific. It does have a computer control, however its different from the post 1995 trucks ( they have more sensors ).
Would it be possible to swap in a turbo 400 / 700 R4, or will that affect the ECM etc. for the rest of the truck as there will be no input.
350 vortec with TBI, so no vacuum signal available ( ? )
I don't know this stuff off the top of my head 'cos i'm strictly a manual / carb kind of dad.
Anyone done this swap - first hand experience? All comments welcomed. Thanks.

88-92 700r4 would be a fairly easy swap. Actually the easiest other than the correct transmission of course. It's a bolt in,bolt for bolt. The mil is going to come on and stay on.( couple of work around or ignore it) tccc a little rewiring, more than one way of doing this. I can walk you through 4 options I know. As for TH350 swap, electronically and engine wise it will work,as for bolting it in, making it work with your transfer case IDK. If things get really desperate there's some more radical, less desirable options. Let's see what you can do with this info first. If you find an 88-92 truck to pull the transmission from, grab the TV cable bracket off the engine while you are grabbing the transmission.

As far as bolting it in, this here is how you would make a common, 2wd TH350 bolt in where a 4x4 700r4 or early 4L60e was:

Thanks guys. We have 2 x potential donor trucks to look at this week that are both early 90's OBS 4x4 trucks. If they are mechanically "OK", and an affordable price plan is to buy, swap transmissions, and then re-build the truck that is not on the road ( they are too expensive to scrap over here ).

Also looking at the 700R4 / carb route ultimately. Electronics are an increasing handicap, especially when "converted" ( some would say butchered ) from left to RHD!

Will report back on progress.

..Joys of keeping your kids on the road .... :)

Thanks all.

Oh and the swb 70's squarebody is the "real" fix - however we are talking frame blast, engine rebuild, cab paint etc. etc. ;-)
