Like always I can be proved wrong.
I cannot find anything online that says GM used 16.5" wheels stock from factory.
BUT
I did talk to my father-in-law, who has worked at a dealership or for himself sence his teens and is 2nd generation of this, worked at a GM dealer in the late 70's and early 80's and told me that "yes gm 3/4 and 1 ton trucks came from the factory with 16'5 wheels". It was so a person could not put cheap car tires on a "heaiver" truck and risk blowing them up at heavier towing.
Also here is another note. In 4x4's you can put a Ford 16.5 rim on a GM but not put a GM on a Ford. There for if Ford was the "only" one with 16.5's then this would not be so. It has to do with the inner dimention of the axle hub hole. GM's were just a tad smaller than Fords.
I am still looking around the net to find hard copy info but what I have stated has been from general knowledge and looking for parts at junk yards and/or not knowing the answer and asking anyone and everyone I knew.

I can be proven wrong at any time though!!! I am NO expert nor claim to be!!!!

My very first truck in high school was a 79 camper special c20. Rusted bad but I still regret selling it years ago. That truck had 16.5 wheels and the stock dog dishes, 14 bolt ff with big drums if that makes a difference. My current ride also has 16.5 rims but they aren't stock.

Probably the ford sterling rear axle. From what I've heard it is a massive bastard.

Chevy center openings are just slightly smaller than Ford and Dodge center openings, regardless of 2wd or 4x4.

I have never tried it but I have heard of people hogging the center holes to a bigger dimension so they could put them onto a ford or dodge.

My truck is Factory 16.5 i have pics and i run 35 12.50 16.5 bfg mud terrains on my truck.

cucv trucks are also 16.5 so fyi it is a factory option. k20's and k30s had em as well as the k30 cucv's.

oh and dont try to shimmy a 16 inch rim on a k20 or cucv because it will rub the caliper. found that out the hard way.
