Show off your non-square project cars.

A couple quick pics to follow on to the MGB project pics posted earlier. Freshly taken this past weekend: Engine bay with factory air cleaners and new metal float chamber vent lines that route any overflow down past the exhaust since the location of the carbs would allow them to drip onto the...

Can we see some overhead console

My 1989 Suburban came with the factory overhead console - I really like it. They fit into the crew cabs apparently, but I don't think it would work in a single cab or Blazer. dont have a pic handy (I'm at work right now) but will get one maybe tomorrow.

K5 Blazer repaint cap body color or white? How to remove fading paint on fiberglass.

I may not have been clear in what I meant: I don't think recoating with gelcoat would be a good idea (its hard to work with, has to be sealed from outside air while curing, etc). But if the existing color is gelcoat from the manufacturer, it might be possible to bring it back around. Gelcoat...

K5 Blazer repaint cap body color or white? How to remove fading paint on fiberglass.

Keep in mind the original color may actually be gelcoat, not paint. A lot of fiberglass products (my primary experience being boats) use a colored gelcoat for the smooth shiny surface. If thats the case, some of the polish/finish products used by boat owners might be the way to go.

Show off your non-square project cars.

I believe that the Buick 215 in its Rover incarnation is effectively what was used in the factory MGB-GT V8s.

Show off your non-square project cars.

That brings me a good question. I've seen several writeups of people putting a 302 or 289 or other smaller American V8 into an MGB, but never saw much info on how to compensate for the additional weight up front. The factory built MGB-GT V8s used an alloy block engine that didn't weigh any...

Show off your non-square project cars.

I had put these in a different posting series last year, but this is my current (past/present/future/possibly perpetual) project of transplanting the innards of a rusted out 1970 MGB into the less rusted (pretty solid now that I replaced the floorpans) shell of a 1973 MGB. It actually will...

What would you pay for this truck?

My MGB project was originally a purple similar to Mopar's Plum Crazy - previous owners redid it in red and its in too nice of condition to justify a complete strip and respray but I'd have loved to go Plum Crazy on it. I've found sections of the orig color under the dash and inside the door cards.

Time traveler with a squarebody. My clock is ticking backwards.

I'm more curious of where to find a clock that fits that otherwise blank gauge opening in the panel.

    $20 Disco Dashlights

I hadn't considered using the strip LEDs; it is a nice way to go. Wouldn't have worked on my British car project because each instrument has its own discrete bulb in a holder. But your pics show it workin pretty nicely on or squarebody trucks. I may have to consider that when its time to...

I think a rod spun a bearing in my rebuilt 454

I see dead RV's with 454s for sale from time to time (and always thought that would be an decent way to get a lower-mileage 454 tailored for use in a truck instead of a car or boat), but my biggest question is what do you do with the rest of the hulk once you've salvaged out whatever is usable?

dies at low idle speeds, when put into gear and when stopped.

I have 1989 so I guess that makes it ALDL, I always believed OBD1 and ALDL were the same. The flash codes are easy enough to access, but not always the most helpful because multiple things can cause the same final result (example: a lean run condition could be caused by a faulty MAP sensor...

    Bench seat to floor console

When I had a bench seat pickup before getting the Suburban, I made my own using a small plastic tote box from Lowes (one of those black ones with the yellow lid, used the really small size one). Cut a couple slots in 2 corners of the shorter side, and used the middle seat belt to secure it in...

dies at low idle speeds, when put into gear and when stopped.

I'm with you on that - both me (and my bank account) are feeling the pain of dealing with OBD1. Why did they have to make accessing the data from OBD1 so close to impossible? Or was it on purpose so you had to depend on your dealership for assistance? I'm not even sure my repair shop actually...

Any tricks to getting your SB doors to close easier?

Plastic helps a lot - there was a thread not too long ago showing that PEX plumbing tubing works really well as a cheap replacement for the plastic sleeve on the striker.

    Hello and help please

Interesting that a single filament bulb uses a double-contact base. If they make an LED replacement I'd go with it. My 1989 had different types. I switched them all (dome and reading lights in overhead) for LEDs because one was burned out and when I went to replace it, the plastic housing was...

    Retro Radio BLUETOOTH

I have no idea what a reasonable offer would be - but I will ask what you're hoping to get for it because I'd love to upgrade from the $20.00 WalMart unit I've got riding in the dash now (which was there when I bought the truck - works but its not real good and aux cable only-no Bluetooth).

    Temp & Oil Pressure Gauges

Easy way to check the wiring is to temporarily ground the sending wire - that should make the gauge go off-scale high. Have someone else watch as you do this because leaving like that for long might not make it happy. You don't even need to let it go all the way off scale - if the needle...

Glad you got it running - with thing like this I always like to figure out what actually went wrong so the next time I know where to start looking.

    Engine woes

So now the question is: Is fuel coming up to the throttle body? There is a way to test the injectors by disconnecting their wires and tapping the contacts of a 9V smoke alarm style battery to their prongs, but I will admit I have not actually done that process. Hopefully someone more familiar...

    Engine woes

Can you hear the pump running when you turn the key on? Usually they are pretty quiet - but if you open the fuel cap and listen close while someone turns the key on, you should hear the pump run for a few seconds (mine sounds more like a quiet hissing in the tank). If you don't hear it run at...

    Engine woes

When mine died in a similar way, it turned out to be the actual magnetic pickup inside the distributor which had failed - if that goes out neither the computer or the ignition module get any signal to fire at all. My first test would be to give it a quick squirt of fuel (not carb or brake...

What’s the latest- greatest rear vision rear view mirror?

I had a co-worker order me one of the Wolfbox units from Amazon for my Suburban - I don't have the model # in front of me but if you google "Wolfbox Mirror" (without the quotes) you will see a selection of them. I have the barn doors with small windows and dark tint, so rear visibility was...

    LED dash light replacements

I bought a bunch of supposedly warm white LED lamps to replace all the bulbs in the panel of the MGB I'm trying to reassemble. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to try them out yet due to spring being my 7 day work weeks. I'm hoping to see how they do in the next week or 2 and if they seem...

86 C20 - Climate control not changing position - cable or vacuum operated?

Also make sure the vacuum is connected in the engine compartment. My 1989 has similar issue (although the A/C doesn't do much anymore) with the routing doors. Turned out the vacuum line ging through the firewall was broken, so none of the diaphrams that move the doors did anything. The heat...
