Headliner

I have an ‘82 K10. Burgundy interior. I need to either replace or recover the original cloth headliner. Not sure how the headliner is held in place. Interior trim/screws? Are the clips holding the headliner in place? What is the best tool that is designed to help remove the headliner? I’m thinking it’s a flat type of plastic wedge type of design. Thxs. Cheers

The only things holding it in place is the outer trim and the sunviser brackets. Trim screws do hold the outer trim to the cab. I replaced mine & it came out well. It wasn't really that difficult. I used a fake suede fabric, and after I trimmed it to the general shape of the headliner board, I started in the middle, folding one half of it to the left, applied the spray on adhesive to the board, then slowly pushed the fabric onto the glue, pushing and molding the fabric over the contours of the headliner board. Once I had the one end finished, I repeated the process for the other end. Once completed & dried, I trimmed off excess fabric to the edge of the headliner board. Take an awl or nailset, and pre-punch the viser bracket screw holes in the new fabric where the existing holes in the board are. You'll also have to carefully cut out the fabric where the viser shaft goes up into the cab. The viser bracket should cover the holes fine if you don't have an "oh ****!" moment.

Also string a bungee cord or two from drivers side to the passenger side to hold the headliner up while you take the trim off, visors and dome light so it doesn't collapse and fold up on you. You'll need the support while dismantling. Also helps with the reinstall.

Well, in their defense, they did want to know HOW TO remove the headliner.

Lol sorry, I couldn't resist.

When I removed the original sagging headliner in my ‘75 I wanted to just seal it up and glue the perforated vinyl back on. Found there was some type of foam backing on top of fiberboard, then the vinyl, and the backing for the vinyl had completely disintegrated. Cleaned all the foam off the board and painted it to reseal the surface. Used 3M trim cement to reinstall the headliner material. Bottom line - lots of steps, and within a few months it was starting to sag again.

The next time I bought the one-piece vinyl headliner from LMC and it worked much better. Needed help holding it in place while I installed the side trim and figured out how to align it with the holes for the sun visors. Not really that hard, but still a PIA. Looked really good once I got it into place.

Grateful to have a truck with no headliner .
