I think a rod spun a bearing in my rebuilt 454

If the machine shop left those out then definately get your money and walk away, no excuse for that. Although, it might be fun to hear them try and explain it... Sorry man, that sucks...

You re-used the shoes... what repair were you performing?

dies at low idle speeds, when put into gear and when stopped.

Alot of the advise and direction we can give you is going to depend on your skill level... do you have any experience working on carbureted engines? It won't do you any good if we have you check part A or setting B if you don't know where or what they are... not throwing shade, just need to know...

    Nylon cam gear years

Here is some info from Hayden: All fan clutches are for specific applications and should be applied only on the vehicle for which they are cataloged. Use of the incorrect fan clutch may result in poor cooling, excessive noise, reduced fuel economy or fan clutch failure. • Standard Duty...

    REDS NECK REPARES!~

The only acceptable band-aid is to replace the shoes with a cheap set. They can be had for under $40 (probably under $20 if you dig hard enough). The one on the left is the original... looks just like the 1974 service manual photo. The one on the right is what I replaced it with, looks just like your 88961767 photo.. :) I am saving everything that comes off this truck down to nuts and bolts...

    Nylon cam gear years

Well, pulled the timing cover and found the timing set had been replaced sometime in the past with a cheapy standard melling kit and it was "really" stretched. Plus, they installed the cam button which the mark IV does not use. I have had the intake manifold off so I know there are no roller...

    14 bolt brake cleanup

Remove everything. Use a wire wheel on the backing plate, paint it with whatever engine enamel your local stores sell (I like Duplicolor low gloss black). You can save the E-brake lever, the adjuster assemblies and the spreader bar, wire wheel those and leave un-painted. get some hi-temp brake...
