My 79 c-10 sport Big 10 has a 10 bolt rear end
3:08 I think one wheel drive. Can I modify this to a posi and what is the process.
I would just switch the entire rear end if I knew what other rear ends fit.
also my big ten rear end has bigger brakes than regular c-10s wider due to the bigger gvw.
And 8 leaf springs each side . I suspect my ring and pinion have excessive wear and I can pull the entire wheel out when on the hoist by anout 3/4 inch. i think that means the c clips are about worn out.
Any help would be appriciated.

You can swap out the diff using a "lunchbox" locker. I don't think that requires setting up the gears. $500-$600.

Backing plates JB3(or JB1), and JB5 interchange without issue.

If you have excessive endplay on the axle shafts there could be multiple reasons. Best is pull the cover off and get some pictures for us. Could be the center cross pin is worn/ends of axles worn (too many one legger burnouts, low fluid level, etc). In normal scenarios the C clips themselves are not really a wear component.

Ring and pinion wear ≠ axle endplay.

The factory limited slip/locking rears used in 12 bolts are the G80 Gov-Lock, known as the gov-bomb. In my opinion not worth it to seek an axle with one in it. There are lots of options for limited slips, clutch style, helical, etc.

Pictures with the cover off will really help direct where attention is needed.

I've told you about this in the past. The last time it had a 3.73. You can get a rear diff out of any 8.5 GM Junkyard 10 bolt doesn't matter, car, van ,truck.8.5 is 8.5 swap the center diff, ring and pinion. Depending on certain years you may have to swap axles. But this is a simple bolt in.

Is this a 10 bolt or a 12 bolt?

A 79 C/K10 would be a 12 bolt factory.

That’s what I was thinking. Perty sure my 77 BIG10 is a 12 bolt.
If it's not been swapped it [your 77] will be a 12 bolt truck.
