Well went ahead and got the paint order going. looks like between the covid shutdowns of the kids’ sports and me not being low bidder on 2 different construction projects which would have had me traveling a lot this winter and likely moving next summer, it’s time to bring on the bodywork!

Ordered base coats today over the phone. Tamco will not do metallics in single stage. And those orders take longer.
For anyone interested they have 30% off everything (except custom colors) Sat after thanksgiving only. Will be placing the rest of the order then.

Still interested to hear anyone else’s experience with this paint. Spoke with Bob, the “dad” and he spent a half hour going through which products he recommends for the project. Super helpful and can tell they have a passion for what they do.
The prices can’t be beat. I don’t think you could buy paint at Autozone cheaper.
Gallon of 1:1 basecoat (2gal sprayable) in metallic blue is only $275. And a quart of dark blue metallic only $75
It’s almost too good to be true.
Bed coming off this week start on frame, replace fuel tank and get the hidden parts painted.
Made a cart for the bed.

Tamco is some excellent stuff for a an even better price, along with a kickass community. Join the Tamco Paint 411 on facebook if you have not.

Keep in mind I am anything but a painter, and my booth consists of a tarp on the ground.

Yes this is the truck I’m talking about.
It needs ALL of it. Paint is basically original, wore out, scratched Chipped, that has been rattle canned and resprayed here and there over the years.
Has about 77 holes drilled in the body (I’m serious) that need welded up, couple small dents and a handful of dings.

It only looks good from 20’ away or further depending on your eyesight!

I don’t understand what T cups do. Liners for the gun so it’s easier to clean up?

hahah... well it looked great in the pictures:happy175:

It's one of those good from afar, but far from good ones I guess. I'm in the same boat, mine isn't terrible but definitely needs some new metal and minor repairs before a nice respray.

Exactly.
It not embarrassing to drive around or anything. And the hood has some nice real patina starting, if you’re into that kind of thing, but yeah, it’s getting re-painted.
Pretty excited, haven’t restored (this is not a resto per say. I’d call it repainting an old truck) anything in quite some time. Paint and bodywork has been limited to changing the appearance of a few vehicles and fixing whiskey dents for some time.
Just ordered a pile of pretty parts too. Dash pad, carpet, window felt and moldings all new trim pieces and some gas filler hoses.
It’s basically a paint job, new seat and some new wheels away from looking pretty awesome!

i’m in Salem. I got mine from a guys backyard about 3 miles from my house. His old man was the original purchaser from a dealership in Beaverton and drove it until he bought a new truck in 2003.

Well I'm not sure what all you bought. And don't know how you will prep everything but tamco is great stuff for the money, prepped right etc.etc. it will hold up better than we will.

Only ordered their base coat right now to get it on the way as they take longer with custom colors.
But will be using DTM primer (only, sposed to bond as good as any to bare steel, it’s high build, and can be thinned to spray as a seal coat if needed. Although I dont believe in primer seal coats. Just induces more profile to the paint job)
And their medium solids clear.
And a can of chassis black.

Personally I'd go bare metal, than acid etch, then dp40lf or spi primer, but there is so much good stuff out there and everyone has their own opinions, I'm just happy to see someone actually using the right products for the job.

Yes its similar to the 3M PPS system, uses those adapters for the T cups, its a hard cup with graduations, liners, and lids with filters in them. Pour your product in there, mix it, pop the lid on shake it, spray, dispose of liner, couple ounces of thinner to clean the gun out and ready to go.
