Is there supposed to be a plastic bushing that goes onto the end of the SM465 shifter where it inserts into the transmission? Or is it supposed to be metal on metal? On the other transmissions I've taken apart it looks similar to the last photo.

Also, is anything supposed to insert into the two grooves cut in the shifter tip? O-rings?

All the ones I have seen are metal to metal where the shifter moves the innards of the transmission.
And if memory serves me correct, there should be steel pins that go into those two grooves.

I remember taking the shifter out of my old SM420 and dropping it into a 465, perfect fit and the shifter was easier to use and had less throw distance between gears.
I always wished GM would have kept the 420 shifter when the 465 was introduced ..........
