Hey my dudes! New to the forum, and to mechanics in general. Been working on my 88 suburban for a few months and decided it was time for an intake mod. Wanted to do a dual cold air but worried about muddin. So I decided on a dual snorkel set up...but wait, they don’t make them for our cars. Perfect! So I decided to fab some up out of PVC and I’m in the painting stage right now. Letting them dry when I’m at work. I’ll see if I can add some pictures and start a proper write up when I get home, I haven’t seen much info about this type of mod on here so I’d like to make mine as detailed as possible.

If anyone has advice or maybe some pics they want to share of their snorkel set up I’d love to see it.

88 Suburban.

Snorkel for an FJ60(actually FJ80) I think it was. Fill it with sand, heat it up and make the bend match the pillar.

Use a top hat for a turbo setup, and a foot or so of pipe.

Damn, that's super clean! Arkansas_V8 i had heard of this method before but at the time wasn't financially able to justify the purchase. And since im wanting dual snorkels, twice as expensive and id have to find a different one for each side. I opted to use ABS pipe which is significantly less pretty :/ however a bit cheaper and easier to repair if necessary. Ill see if i can get some pictures posted later...thanks guys!

This is the basic set up. Some 4” ABS pipe. A couple of 90 elbows, safari head and a TON of electrical tape and enamel. Now I’m just waiting for the enamel to dry (either today or tomorrow) couple finishing touches then the install and post the write up. Thanks for following along!

Can you post a picture for me of how all of that seals to the carb? I'm contemplating doing this eventually.

Pulled up what I used. It's some turbo stuff I had laying around from an old project. And loads of silicone.

SNORKEL WAS FOR AN FJ80

Seal the carb to the intake, seal the top hat to the carb, seal the piping, and waterproof everything.

You will burn through more starters, and alternators no matter what if you go deep.

If you plan on being a submarine- seal the valve covers, raise the breathers for everything, and you will still find stuff you forgot.

Sorry I’m late. Works been hell lol. I finally finished the project and I’ve got to say I like em. Definitely homemade and definitely not perfect but damn it’s original at least. I started out with 3 of the 4” 90 degree elbows and a length of abs pipe. Connected them all with cement and smaller lengths of pipe to get the angle as good as possible. That proved to be the hardest part. The abs was impossible to bend with heat. It was very thick walled and at 4 inches in diameter the heat required was ridiculous. I had to use a propane torch and even that took several minutes. As soon as I made the first bend the pipe started to buckle and the piece was ruined. So I went with more elbows (3) and did my best. I got some safari snorkel heads I fixed to the top by inserting into the pipe and then wrapped with a dumb amount of electrical tape that was then epoxied over. I put on 4 coats of rustoleum spray bedliner and then 5 coats of rustoleum matte enamel and 2 coats of rustoleum matte clear coat. Behind the snorkel head I put some uni filter 65 ppi foam sheet just to help with debris. Cut a hole about 4 1/2 inches into the engine bay. Insert snorkel and attach via L bracket at the first elbow. Then used 220 lb cable ties to attach to the (trim?) piece located above the driver window. Feels very secure and hasn’t fallen off yet. Just gotta be on the look out for dry rotting/ replace frequently. Finally I siliconed the point where the snorkel enters the fender.

Now for the main filters I used spectre 8136 cone filters. I fitted the filters inside two 7”-4” reducers that were bound with duct tape. Then electrical tape and finally epoxied over. I riveted some rubber sheet on the inside so it starts at the lip of the reducer then meets the metal base of the air filter. Make sure everything is snug and then silicone all gaps. Spray with bedliner and add any design your heart desires.

Connect ducting from elbow to filter(make sure you attach it as you would if the filter was not in the metal housing. in other words make sure you don’t hook it up to the filter backwards.) then run ducting from the other end of the filter housing to the dual plenum (spectre 9859) zip tie to attach. Run gasket maker between plenum and carb. Cable tie filter housing anywhere convenient and out of the way. Make sure to position your ducting in a similar fashion so you don’t run the risk of it getting caught up in the belts.
