a newer 1985 engine. Upon looking at the pics he took and sent me, I'm confused on what this engine is as the hard lines going to where the injectors should be appear to disappear into the head as opposed to screwing to the top of the injector like my 6.5l? Any idea of what we're looking at here?

Yes, Sir, This looks to be an Oldsmobile 5.7L Diesel. Very very Rare less than 10% Of the C10s came with them and are Very Collectable to the Oldsmobile diesel guys. Not too long ago one sold for $14,700 in a group I'm in on Facebook.

Honestly, If you're Son Buys it, I STRONGLY Suggest keeping it Original There was less than 4414 Of those built with the Diesel!!! Not to mention My friend Michael is trying to buy the Patient and name of Oldsmobile diesel to Reproduce Parts... Since he has 3 Storage barns Full of Complete Cars, NOS Parts And Engines...

The Early ones 78-79 Used Pencil Injectors, The Later Blocks (Improved DX) Used Micro / Poppet Fuel Injectors 80-84 and the EGR were built into the Intakes, A good way to differ a 6.2 Diesel from an Oldsmobile is Engine Color, Injectors, Intake and as well which way the Air intake is facing If it's on the Drivers Side (Oldsmobile) IF it's on the Passengers Side (GM 6.2 Diesel)

There are still parts available for this Engine... More so than the 4.3 V8 Diesel they made. But like the rumours, it was NOT a Converted Gas to Diesel... The only thing that was Gas was the Engine block and Headstuds... The nice thing is the engine shares some parts with the 6.2 Diesel Such as the Injection Pump (DB2 Mechanical)

Definitely an early Olds 5.7L. It would be incredibly rare since there were so few built and most were converted to gas when the 5.7 crapped out.

BTW, the injection pumps are only similar. It has no commonality with the 6.2/6.5L DB2.

so, is there any way of verifying the actual year of this engine? Do you think its 78/79 or the newer version?

I was told by my Friend Michael since he owns so many that they are interchangeable Which I believe the guy was at the GM Testing Grounds for the engine or some type of "Program" They had in the 80s when they came out.

To Verify the engine's year Just depends on again what it has for Injectors and some other things that the Olds guys are experts at.
I know them a little bit but never owned one Near impossible to find one in Michigan.

If the truck is Original with the factory diesel I would assume it hasn't been messed with.
But If you can get more photo's of the engine I can get them to my Friend and Ask him.

I'm a RoosaMaster/Stanadyne dealer and I rebuild these things for a living. Trust me.

Those are pencil injectors. There's a very good chance it's original.

As far as it being a newer engine, ithought these went away when the 6.2 was introduced in '81. Unless they used them in cars after they went away from the trucks, that's probably not an '85.

The cars did get them until ‘85. We had a family friend, a local physician, who drove an ‘85 Impala that came with one, and I know the GM wagons like the Custom Cruiser came with them. He traded that Impala in for a new Grand Marquis in like 2006, and that thing was still running well. I guess they got the kinks ironed out okay later on.

Right, the later engines were better, particularly the V6. The 6.2 supplanted the 5.7 in trucks early on, but in cars they soldiered on until '86. Unfortunately, by then their reputation was so shot nobody wanted them.

GM single-handedly destroyed the automotive diesel market in America.

81 Was the last year for the 5.7 olds Diesel, Pretty much using the rest that they had... 6.2 didn't come out until 1982, as well with the 700r4.

But the 6.2 was being made even as early as 1980.

Yeah sadly... Olds should of put a Water/Fuel Separator & Proper Headstuds on them instead of rushing for production!
That's why so many of them blew-up! Head studs were from the Olds 350 Gas, Over time they would shrink and suck in air and blow them up, Not to mention the horror stories i hear about the Water in fuel all the time
